5/15/07 Excitement being a Falcons Fan

Excitement being a Falcons Fan!

The Atlanta Falcons have become one of the franchises that is always in the news...now before giving praise, keep in mind 95% of the news is bad and negative. Lets look over the recent history hitting the airwaves.

Jonathan Babineaux - has been charged with felony cruelty to animals in Gwinnett County . Gwinnett police alleged that Babineaux killed his live-in girlfriend's dog, a pit bull mix named Kilo, in February. Babineaux is practicing with the 1st team defense because...

Grady Jackson - Jackson is suing the Falcons for defamation and invasion of privacy, alleging team officials wrongly released his medical records to several media outlets and hurt his market value while he was a free agent. Jackson still showed up for mini camp despite the lawsuit.

Rod Coleman - Injures his knee. The injury, which Coleman acknowledged to several teammates, occurred over the weekend in a boating accident.

All three are prominent defensive linemen and play important roles.

Michael Vick - This is national news that everybody has heard about. Mike owned property where a cousin of his was living and allegedly breeding and raising fight dogs. Last Friday a Fox reporter, Chris Landry, was quoted saying this about his discussion with former Falcon Ray Buchanan : "He tells me that Michael has been into this dog fighting for so long that . . . .he not only knew about, he is behind all of it, he's paying for all of it. . . . Apparently, he's into it big time."

This hit the sports talk radio yesterday morning and both local sports talk stations had Big Play Ray on and he sidestepped all hard questions and tried to say there must have been a misunderstanding with Landry. At some point yesterday, through Fox, Landry made a statement holding fast to his account of the discussion with Buchanan.

Someone is lying and this will get sorted out soon.

If found to be involved directly with the dog fighting in Virginia, Mike Vick will likely get a large suspension from the NFL.

Once again this has callers on sports talk radio defending Vick (I have no problem with people defending him until proof comes out of involvement) but many of the callers are playing the race card which is extremely old. The biggest argument or logic for the race card is claims that Patrick Kerney (former white Falcon player) did not get same treatment when an alleged rape happened at his house to a house guest while he slept. Evidently the house guest arrived at the house late at night with multiple men met out in Buckhead. The claim is that Kerney is getting a pass and should be guilty of something because it was his house. The difference is that IF Vick is found to be directly involved he will be guilty of a Federal crime. If there is no linkage to Vick, then he has not committed any crimes other than bad judgement in letting his cousin live and run the house.

Yesterday more bad news came the Falcons way, Brian Finneran, who missed last season with a knee injury, reinjured the knee in practice and might be gone for this season as well. Finneran is a very good 2nd or 3rd receiver that did very well catching Vick's bulletts two years ago.

So going into the season, maybe they don't have a quarterback (to be seen) and their #2 receiver is likely out. Their defensive line might not have 3 key players and they traded their quality backup quarterback to Texas a few months ago.

The franchise has NEVER won back to back seasons since they joined the league in 1966. In the upside down world they live in and last season being a 7-9 campaign, this was supposed to be a good year...oh well, another top draft pick should be available next year.
