MLB playoffs
The Sox will have homefield through the playoffs. Looks like my prediction back in June http://blmeanie.net/blmeanieblog//index.php/a/2007/06/ that 95 wins will take the AL East division was right. The Sox ended with 96 and the Yankees 94.
Sox have the Angels in the first round with the favorable schedule (if you want to pitch a 3 man rotation). I like the way the Sox finished after floundering for a while. They still are not healthy, but who is. Expect Beckett and possibly Schilling in first two games. This would leave Dice-K for game 3 before bringing Beckett back for game 4 if necessary. Sox in 4.
Yankees and Indians. Yankees are the wildcard. Indians finished with 96 wins. Indians have the big 2 on the mound back to back (Sabathia and Carmona). Indians have the home field advantage...Yankees in 5.
Perhaps the Mets collapse will take over as the worst in modern times (from the '78 Sox) and be flashed in highlight reels for the next few decades as such. While the Braves didn't make it, there are some smiles around town that the Mets didn't either...Good luck to the Phillies with whomever they face.
Time to vent a little : the country club scheduling is absurd. Taking 8 days to play 5 games is ridiculous. They play 162 games in 181 days (April 2 - Sept 30). So in just under 6 months, they have 19 days off, or 3 per month or 75% of a day off per week.
In the postseason they get to have 3 days off in the first week. All sports do this but it gets magnified more in baseball because of the volume of games they play.
If a team's strengths include depth that allows them to excel over the season playing virtually every day, why penalize them in the postseason by allowing a team with potentially less depth by allowing so many off days?
