10/8/07 1986/87 vs. Today

1986-1987!

ok, so we aren't yet done but take a look at the Boston sports scene right now compared to 1986-1987 (sorry to the Boston Globe running a similar story - I have planned this for a while).

In 1986-87 as a Boston sports fan, we had it pretty good.

1)
Celtics beat the Rockets for the NBA title, Bird was MVP, one of the absolute greatest teams EVER.

2)
Bruins make it to the NHL finals only to get crushed by the Oilers

3)
Patriots make it to the superbowl only to get crushed by the dancing bears

4)
RedSox make it to the world series only to get crushed by Bill Buckner and Bob Stanley (or Rich Gedman if you prefer)

So here we are in 2007-08

1)
Celtics have made moves to at least get excitement going. Some analysts say it is enough to win the east and get to the finals, we'll see

2)
Bruins have sucked, might be better...who knows

3)
Patriots appear on paper (and on the field so far) to be the reinvention of Miami Dolphins of '72. Would be shocking if they don't win it all

4)
RedSox have righted the ship and beat a miserably underperforming Angels team. Appear to be ready to roll and possibly win it all again.

Other than not having my favorite sports hero ever, Larry Bird, to root for, I'd say this version of Boston sports ranks equal to or higher than the glory days of '86-87.

'86 Celtics = '07 Patriots {both are supremely dominant in their respective leagues and have the MVP on the roster}
'86 RedSox = '07 RedSox {I think the Sox will win it so they will be even better than the '86 version and there is no hobbled Buckner around this time}
'86 Bruins = '07 Celtics? {reaching but lets say the Celtics get past the first round of the playoffs}
'86 Patriots > '07 Bruins

So if two championships come out of this season (Sox/Pats) then by all accounts that trumps any year.

I haven't mentioned the BC Eagles cause I don't intimately follow them but they are ranked #4 right now and (excuse me) flying high.

Any thoughts, opinions of a better sports town ?

    Sorry for the late post. But I agree that 2004 was better. 1986 was just too dissapointing to out duel two championships. You have a C's bias my man.

    I would give you 04 based on the historical impact alone (Sox). But all 4 teams were in championship rounds in 86. When has that happened for any city before?

    You gotta be intrigued by the C's this year, eh Rob?

    Too much disappointment my man ... and let's not forget the success of the NY teams that year. Intrigued? I don't know. I'm pretty sure I'll get into it if they make the playoffs. But I just can't watch Basketball anymore.

    It just doesn't have that excitement without Johnny.

    "Now there's a steal by Bird! Underneath to DJ who lays it in!!...Right at one second left!! What a play by Bird! Bird stole the inbounding pass, laid it up to DJ, and DJ laid it up and in, and Boston has a one-point lead with one second left! OH, MY, THIS PLACE IS GOING CRAZY!!!"
